Who am I kidding? Number four’s my only option. Although, #1 might be happening whether I make a conscious effort at it or not.

Before I can say anything, though, Marianne picks up the plates and edges me away from the sink. “It’s none of my business,” she says. I can feel the heat from her face, which is still flaming. “I’ll finish up in here. You and Pastor and Max can go on home.” She shoots me what seems to be a genuinely kind smile.

When I don’t move, she stops sorting plates from cutlery and puts a damp hand on my forearm. “It’s okay. I’m embarrassed and would rather be alone. Please.”

Brice pulls on my shoulder. “C’mon, Peyton. Marianne has this under control. Thanks, Marianne.”

“You’re welcome,” she quickly says. “See you tomorrow morning at PoP.”

The thought of having to face everyone tomorrow morning, after they’ve most likely heard what Marianne overheard, is almost too much to handle. Now I blush and tear up. “Oh,” I breathe, no longer physically able to continue resisting Brice’s efforts to lead me from the kitchen. I guess she doesn’t need me to tell her right now that I won’t be at PoP tomorrow; it’ll make sense when I don’t show up.

In the gymnasium, where all the tables are set up, the women sitting near Vivian and Max try to engage me in conversation when Brice and I appear, but I walk past them without even glancing in their direction. I make it to the gym doors at a near-run, leaving Brice to make whatever technically honest excuse he can make for me while he stops to get Max.

They’ll find out the whole truth and nothing but the truth soon enough, I’m sure.
